Mary Jo Johnson's Bio
As a very young child growing up near Chicago, she was drawn to the Old Masters, teaching herself to draw by copying paintings in graphite. As an adult she was blessed to be able to study painting with notable realist artists in Europe, including being an artist in residence in Bruges, Belgium.
She is especially inspired to paint portraits that capture the spirit and soul of a person which emotionally stirs the viewer. Nature and wildlife are also themes that captivate her to express emotion, connection and depth.
Mary Jo seeks to bridge the traditions and craftsmanship of classical art of the Old Masters while embracing the innovative spirit and esthetics of contemporary creativity. She invites viewers to step into a world of beauty, contemplation, and wonder.
